At The Cross
Isaac Watts
<D>Alas! and did my Savior bleed
And <G>did <D>my <G>Sov'<D>reign <A>die?
<D>Would He devote that sacred head
For <Em>such a <A>worm as <D>I?
Refrain:
At the <D>cross, at the cross where I <A>first saw the light,
And <A7>the burden of my heart rolled <D>away,
It was <G>there by faith I <D>received my sight,
And <Em>now I am hap<A7>py all the <D>day!
Thy <D>body slain, sweet Jesus, Thine
And <G>bathed <D>in <G>its <D>own <A>blood
<D>While the firm mark of wrath divine,
His <Em>soul in <A>an<D>guish stood.
Was <D>it for crimes that I had done
He <G>groaned <D>u<G>pon <D>the <A>tree?
<D>Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And <Em>love <A>be<D>yond degree!
Well <D>might the sun in darkness hide
<G>And ,D>shut <G>his <D>glo<A>ries in,
<D>When Christ, the mighty Maker died,
For <Em>man <A>the <D>creature's sin.
<D>Thus might I hide my blushing face
<G>While <D>His dear <G>cross <D>ap<A>pears,
<D>Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And <Em>melt my <A>eyes to <D>tears.
But <D>drops of grief can ne'er repay
The <G>debt <D>of <G>love <D>I <A>owe:
<D>Here, Lord, I give myself away,
'Tis <Em>all <A>that I <D>can do.
