Fairy tales: Puppet theater director

An elderly gentleman was among the passengers on the ship; his face was so cheerful, pleased that, don't lie, he had to recognize its owner as the happiest person in the world. And so it was - he told me that himself. He turned out to be my fellow countryman, a Dane, and the director of an itinerant troupe. He carried the whole troupe with him in a large chest: he was the director of the puppet theater. The natural, cheerful disposition of the director passed through the crucible of tests and was tempered thanks to the experiment of one polytechnic. The latter turned the director into a true lucky one. I did not immediately realize what was the matter; then he told me the whole story in detail. There she is.

“It was in the town of Slagels,” he said. - I gave a performance in the hall at the post office; the gathering was full, the audience was brilliant, but completely green, with the exception of two or three elderly matrons. Suddenly, a gentleman in a black pair enters, apparently a student, sits down and where he should laugh, where he should applaud! .. The spectator is not ordinary! I wanted to know who he was. I hear - a candidate of polytechnic sciences, sent to the province to educate the people. At eight o'clock in the evening, my performance was over, the children had to go to bed early, and my job was to take care of the public's convenience. At nine o'clock the candidate began to lecture and show his experiments, and now I have become a listener. Yes, it was worth listening to and seeing! True, most of the lecture was just right for the pastor to understand, as we say, but nevertheless I understood something, and most importantly, I got the idea that if we humans are able to think of such things, then we should be good for something even after we are buried in the ground. The candidate positively did little miracles, but everything came out so simple for him, naturally! In the days of Moses and the prophets, such a polytechnic would have been known as one of the first wise men, but in the Middle Ages he would have simply been burned! All night I could not sleep; the next day in the evening I again gave a performance; the candidate was again present, and I was, as they say, in shock. I heard from one actor that, playing the roles of the first lovers, he always had in mind one of the spectators, for her he played alone, forgetting everyone else. The candidate has become such a "spectator" for me; I played for him. The performance was over, my whole troupe was summoned, and the candidate invited me to his place to drink a bottle of wine with him in his company. He talked about my theater, and I - about his science, and I think that both of us were equally satisfied with each other, but I still outdid him in my business: he himself could not explain many of his tricks. Why, for example, is an iron plate passed through a spiral magnetized? She seems to be spiritualized, but how, with what? That's the same with people, I think: the creator passes them through the spiral of time, the spirit descends on them, and here you are - Napoleon, Luther or someone else of that kind. “The world is a series of wonders,” said my candidate, “but we are so used to them that we call them commonplace.” And he started to explain; in the end it seemed to me that the crown of my head had been lifted and my brain room had expanded! I confessed that if my time had not gone away, I would have entered the Polytechnic Institute right away, to learn to disassemble the world bit by bit, even though I am already one of the happiest people in the world! “One of the happiest people! - repeated the candidate, as if savoring my words. "Are you happy?" - "Yes! - I answered. - I'm happy; I and my troupe are well received in all cities. True, I have one desire, which sometimes teases me like a devil, and confuses my cheerful disposition ... I would like to become the director of a real troupe! " - “Would you like to bring your puppets to life? Would you like them to become real actors, and you are the director of a real troupe? The candidate asked me. "Do you think you will be quite happy then?" I have one desire that sometimes teases me like a devil and confuses my cheerful disposition ... I would like to become the director of a real troupe! " - “Would you like to bring your puppets to life? Would you like them to become real actors, and you are the director of a real troupe? The candidate asked me. "Do you think you will be quite happy then?"

He himself did not think this, but I thought, and we argued for a long time, but each remained unconvinced. As we talked, we never stopped clinking glasses: the wine was good, but not simple, whatever you say; otherwise I would have to explain the whole story by saying that I was simply addicted! But I was not drunk, no, no! .. Suddenly I saw that the whole room was as if illuminated by the sun; the candidate's face glows. I now remembered the legends about the eternally young gods of antiquity, walking around the world. I told him about this, he smiled, and I was ready to swear that in front of me sat a disguised god himself or one of the relatives of the gods. And so it was; and my wish was destined to come true: the dolls were to become living people, and I was to be a real director. On this occasion we drank more; then the candidate hid all my dolls in a chest, tied it to my back and put me through the spiral.

In fact, I was lying on the floor, and my whole troupe jumped out of the box. The dolls turned into wonderful artists - they told me this themselves - and I was their director. Everything was ready for the first performance, but the whole troupe wanted to talk to me, the audience too. The first dancer said that if she does not stand on one leg, the fees will fall; she was the main person in the troupe and demanded appropriate treatment of herself. The doll that played the queens wanted to be treated like a queen even outside the stage, otherwise she would lose the habit of her role! The outgoing actor, who appeared with the letters, imagined himself to be the same artistic magnitude as the first lover: there are no small or great actors, all are equally important in the sense of a stage ensemble! The tragedian, on the other hand, demanded that his entire role should consist entirely of one strong point: after all, they are followed by applause and calls. The prima donna wanted to play only under red Bengal lighting - it suited her, and blue was not to her face. In a word, everyone buzzed like flies in a bottle, and in the middle of it I sat myself - I was the director! My breath spiraled in my chest, my head was spinning, I found myself in the most miserable position a person can get into: I was surrounded by a completely new breed of people! I sincerely wanted to hide them all back in the chest and never be a real director for ever! I told them bluntly that all of them, in essence, were just puppets, and for this they beat me half to death. my head was spinning, I found myself in the most miserable position that a person can get into: I was surrounded by a completely new breed of people! I sincerely wanted to hide them all back in the chest and never be a real director for ever! I told them bluntly that all of them, in essence, were just puppets, and for this they beat me half to death.

I woke up in my bed, in my room. How I got there from the candidate, he knows, not me. The moon was shining directly on the floor, and on the floor was an overturned chest and around it all my dolls, small and large - the whole troupe! I didn’t yawn, jumped out of bed, threw them all into the chest, which, with their feet down, with their heads, slammed the lid and sat down on it myself. That was the picture! Can you imagine her? I can. “Well, now you will stay there! - I said to the dolls. "And I never wish to revive you again!" My heart felt so easy, I was again the happiest person. The candidate of polytechnic sciences enlightened me. I was so happy that as I sat on the trunk I fell asleep. In the morning - more likely, however, at noon, I slept for an inconceivably long time that day! - I woke up and saw that I was still sitting on the chest. Now I was quite happy: I became convinced that my previous wish was just stupidity. I inquired about the candidate, but he disappeared, as the Greek and Roman gods disappeared. Since then, I have remained the happiest person. Well, am I not really a happy director? My troupe does not reason, the audience does too, but amuses itself with all its heart. And I can freely compose plays for myself. Of all the plays, I take what I want - the best, and no one has a claim. There are plays that are now neglected by directors of large theaters, but which thirty years ago gave full collections, made the audience shed tears: I give these plays on my stage, and the little ones cry, as their fathers and mothers used to cry. I give "Johannes Montfaucon" and "Duvequet" - of course, in an abbreviated form: little ones do not like long lovemaking; at least they are unhappy, but soon. This is how I traveled all over Denmark and far and wide, I know everyone, and everyone knows me. Now I'm heading to Sweden; I will be lucky there, I will make some money - I will become a Scandinavian (an adherent of the idea of uniting all three northern states), otherwise I will not; I tell you frankly, as to my fellow countryman!

And as such, of course, I was not slow to tell you about my meeting; that's my habit - to tell.
