As the fourth single released since the 2018 studio album The Elements and the 2020 demo EP The Lost Demos, “Promised Land” is inspired by McKeehan’s grandfather, a former Wyoming County miner who died of Black Lung disease. 

Because of this, he shot the music video in his grandfather’s hometown of Glen Rogers as well as the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine. In the song, McKeehan pairs this imagery with the Promised Land of the Bible, the land God made the Israelites wait over 400 years to enter, most of which was spent in slavery.

 McKeehan parallels both of these examples with his own journey in life, using a slow, ballad-like song to tell the story of his time over the years in the music business without forgetting about God and his family and fans.
