A US court has cleared Ed Sheeran of copying Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’ in his hit song ‘Thinking Out Loud.’
Ed Sheeran, the British singer, songwriter and musician, faced a lawsuit from the estate of Marvin Gaye after Kathryn Townsend Griffin, the daughter of Gaye’s co-writer Ed Townsend, claimed that Sheeran and his music publishers Warner Music Group and Sony Music Publishing had infringed on their copyright.
Sheeran, who said he would quit music if he was found guilty, denied using any elements of Gaye’s 1973 classic in his own 2014 chart-topper.
The court heard from Sheeran’s musicologist that the four-chord progression at issue was common in many songs before Gaye’s 'Let’s Get It On" came out.
